Saturday, January 26 Meeting Notes
We had a fantastic
turnout for the meeting with around 25 club members present. The weather was so
nice a few members even drove their VWs to the meeting. It really has been a
strange winter weatherwise. We also had guests from the Sheboygan VW Club;
Gene and Phyllis Smith.
Club purpose – To help VW
enthusiasts meet and join others who share that same interest whether it be air
cooled or water cooled.
Club T-Shirts and Hats Available
– Club member, Jim Bremer has designed a club hat for us this year and a
sample was on display at the meeting. They are $12.00 each. They’re made of
tan brushed canvas with a navy bill. The club logo is embroidered on the front
of the cap. Howard, Sr was sporting his own version of the club hat and many of
us liked it better. I will ask Jim Bremer if we can order the dark green hat
with tan bill along with the tan one or instead of the tan one. If you are
interested in ordering one or more please let me know so that we can place our
order at one time. I will be mailing a notice to the other members who aren’t
connected to the Internet. The T-Shirts are pre-shrunk but if you like
yours to fit loose, then order the next size up. Large and Extra Large are
$15.00 each. 2 XX Large are $17.00 each. 3 XXX Large are $18.00 each. There is a
white and a gray Fruit of the Loom T-Shirt. Gray seems to be the popular choice.
You can find the order form on
this page: http://www.nwvc.itgo.com/clubmerchandise/tshirthatorder.htm
I’ll submit the t-shirt and hat order on February 21st. That should give
everyone including the folks who I have to mail, enough time to order. The next
time we order t-shirts and hats will likely be next year around this same time.
Vintage Volkswagen stickers are
still available to order as well. You can find the order form on this
page: http://www.nwvc.itgo.com/clubmerchandise/vintagestickers.htm
They are only $5.00 and come in many different colors. Please remember that when
you order these items you are helping fund future club events. This is one
reason I do not charge membership dues for the club.
Sunshine Bug – Jenny Wiegmann
is our very own Sunshine Bug. Don’t forget to let her know when a club member
needs one of her creative cards for a birthday, get well, new baby, etc. Her
cards are so cheery it’s hard not to be happy after receiving one.
Calendar of Events – A calendar
and membership list was handed out at the meeting. One of the reason I list
other shows on this calendar is so members can get together to caravan to shows
if they wish. It makes a very big impact when clubs do this and the show
promoters love it.
Here are some of the ideas for
the upcoming year for the club. Please share any ideas you might have for the
club, too. All suggestions and comments are welcomed and will be considered. This
club is for you and we have a year of activities planned or in the process of
being planned for the upcoming season.
Show n Tell Meeting – Howard,
Sr has suggested having another meeting during the winter months to help with
the VW withdrawl syndrome that so many of us suffer from after a busy season of
shows and events. The idea is to have members get together and bring a VW
related item to show off and talk about. This could be a VW toy, part, tool,
book, photos, etc. Anything VW related that you want to show and talk about is
fine. This would be an informal type of meeting where members could put their
items on tables and shuffle between the tables to see the items and talk about
them. Mary Beth Gibbons also had a suggestion to have a meeting where members
could ask questions of other members who have more experience with working on
their Dubs. This could fit in with this meeting as well. I’m going to let
Howard, Sr take the lead on this one since it was his idea. Does someone want to
host this meeting? Howard can host it if he likes but it would be nice to have
the meeting in a different location because in April we will have the Fix-It Day
in Oshkosh and the June(?) Club Picnic and Campout in Oshkosh.
Suggested Date: March ??
Location: To be decided
Fri, Sat, &
Sun, March 15-17, 2002 - God’s Country Racing Association Custom Auto Show, La
Crosse Civic Center, La Crosse, WI. Doug
Gourley would like to see some Volkswagens entered in this. I will be posting a
show flyer on the club website for this soon.
V-Dub Fix-It Day
This was a big hit last year. Do you have a project on your VW that needs to be
done but you’re not sure of how to tackle it? Do you have a frustrating
problem that you haven’t been able to figure out? Or perhaps you have some
expertise working on a particular area of VWs that you would like to share with
the club. Why not have the club members help you or show members what you have
learned? All suggested projects/expertise for the Fix-It Day need to be in by
February 21st. Send all projects/expertise to Scorrao@excite.com
or by phone (920) 982-0171 and I will post them on the club’s Yahoo Groups
Internet list for the members to vote on. Some ideas may not be doable if we do
not have someone who has knowledge of that particular task. The idea is to get a
project(s) that everyone wants to learn how to do but also one that has a few
people who have accomplished it before or can show how to do it. We do ask that
you are an active member of the club in good standing for at least one year
before you submit your VW/idea for the Fix-It Day.
Suggested Date: April 13, 2002
Location: Keith & Jenny Wiegmann’s
Cruise In and Cruise Out
Brian Zuhse organized this for us last year and it was a great turnout and time.
They have asked Brian when we were going to do it this year already. So it is
back by popular demand. Last year we all enjoyed parking our Dubs in the parking
lot for an hour or so and then a cruise through Appleton’s distinguished homes
district and downtown Appleton.
Suggested Date: May 11, 2002
Location: JD’s Family Restaurant, Appleton
MichiganVVC Vintage Volkswagen
Festival
This year’s theme is still being worked on but you can bet this will be the
same great show and swap meet as it has been every other year. On the evening
prior they have a banquet dinner with a guest speaker which is good, too. Nick
and I will be going to this again so if you’re interested in Caravaning with
us let me know. There is camping in a nice state campground that has showers
near Auburn Hills.
Date: Sunday, May 19
Location: VWoA Headquarters in
Auburn Hills, MI
The Real Source Funfest
A larger show that is free. They even give you coupons for free food for the
weekend. It is a very nice show and well worth the drive if you have never been
to it before.
Date: Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2
Location: The Real Source,
Effingham, IL
Capitol City Volkswagen Club’s
Spring Show
Will be at the VFW like last year. Let’s get a caravan together for this.
Date: Sunday, June 9, 2002
Location: VFW Truax Longmire Post
8483, Madison, WI
4th Annual
International Drive Your VW to Work Day (if you don’t work than drive it
anywhere).
The idea is to get out and drive your VW. This also marks our club’s third
anniversary. Last year we had a gathering at the Starlite Diner and then a
cruise through downtown Appleton. A Fish Fry at Waverly Beach in Menasha
followed the cruise. I’m sad to announce that the Starlite Diner has closed
its doors for business, so we will be looking for a new location. At the meeting
it was mentioned that perhaps we should try doing something at Waverly Beach
again. Another suggestion was to have our club’s picnic on this date because
July’s VW shows are in conflict with our normal picnic date. If we do the
picnic, we would try to get the Oshkosh Menominee Park’s shelter like we did
last year. Please let me know your thoughts on this one. I’m leaning towards
the picnic. Howard will offer a campout in conjunction with the picnic at his
farm.
Date: Saturday, June 22
Location: ??
Chippewa Valley VW Club’s
Campout and Show
The Chippewa Valley VW Club typically has their campout and show the middle of
June. Perhaps we should have a drive your VW to Eau Claire rally? Perhaps those
who don’t want to go to the Eau Claire campout and show could organize
something locally. Until we know the dates of the CVVC show this one is up in
the air.
Date: Saturday and Sunday, June ??
Location: ??
July ?? Pierce Park Old Car Show at Pierce Park in Appleton, WI.
July 12, 13, & 14 is the Old Car Show and Swap in Iola, WI.
July 20 is the MOFOCO Bugfest in Union Grove, WI
Saturday, August 3 – 3rd
Annual Fox Valley All VW Show at Van Dyn Hoven Imports in Appleton. This is a
tentative date, will update on the confirmed date later.
I will be looking for volunteers for registration, directing of parking, and any
other things that come up that the planning committee can’t handle. The
planning committee consists of myself, new President (TBD) of Volksport, and
Sean Fraser of NEW Volksport and of course, our host Van Dyn Hoven Imports
(Gerald Van Dyn Hoven and George Haushauer). The date will likely be Saturday,
August 3, but I won’t know for sure until after we have our first planning
meeting. We will again offer a campout at Howard’s VW Farm in Oshkosh on the
Friday preceding the show and on Saturday night after the show.
Fri.,
Sat., & Sun., Aug 9-11 - Trip to Lindbergh Home, Little Falls, MN
Charles Lindbergh’s 1959 VW Beetle has been on display at the Minnesota
History Center in St. Paul since last July. It will return to Little Falls as a
focus of a new long term exhibit at the Lindbergh House in August of 2002. The
exhibit coincides with Lindbergh’s 100th birthday and a community
wide celebration (August 9 to 11, 2002) of the 75th anniversary of
Lindbergh’s return to Little Falls after his historic flight in May of 1927.
The Sheboygan VW Club is organizing a trip for this and we will have more
details later.
August 10 - RMMW’s date for their show in Woodland Park near Denver, CO. With
the recent news of their Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and the news that they’re
moving to Colorado Springs may affect this show.
August 30 – September 2 – Buses Nowhere Near The Arch in Hannibal, MO.
Sat. & Sun, August 17 & 18 - Vintage Military Show, Krause Publications, Iola, WI
Capitol City Volkswagen
Club’s Bug Out Show
Date: August 18, 2002
Location: Zimbrick’s VW,
Middleton, WI
Sheboygan County VW Club &
SRP Automotive All VW Car Show & Gathering
I would like to get a few of us together to enter the show as a club again. I
will try to do a group entry again, so club members who RSVP ahead of time to me
will get in free.
Date: October 5, 2002
Location: Batavia, WI
Door County Fall Cruise, Sister
Bay Fall Fest and Campout
Dale Hallen will be providing more information at a later date for the club to
participate in the Sister Bay Fall Fest. This was a great time last year. We had
about 10 VWs in the show set to the side of their normal Classic Car Show. We
made quite a scene in the parade as the only organized car group. The parade is
all down hill as well so it is easy on the clutch. Some of the group camped and
some stayed at a local hotel. We all met for breakfast the next morning before
heading home. Mark your calendars now for a great Fall weekend in Door County.
Date: October 18, 19, & 20
Location: Door County & Sister
Bay
We also had a guess how many staples were in the insulation that Nick put in the
shop this year. The prize was a cuddly Beetle throw. The closest guess was Rick
Werth’s guess of 20,000. We also had several door prizes donated (thank you
Brian Zuhse and Nicholas Turoski) that were drawn and I think everyone went home
with something. Oh and the correct number of staples was 37, 800.
After the meeting was finished we enjoyed pizzas, Jenny’s delicious brownies, and conversation. Thanks to everyone who made this a great meeting and I’m looking forward to a great year of VW fun with the club. So get that VW ready!
